Since 1832, the gorge has been opened up to hikers as part of the Annatal valley. It has been protected as a geological natural monument since 1977.
It is located in the Wartburg - Hohe Sonne nature reserve, one of the larger protected areas in Thuringia. Frost weathering, flowing water and carried debris have shaped the romantic gorge over long periods of time.
