Many guests think of the Wartburg first when they hear Eisenach. But the city also unfolds its character below the castle: 19th-century villa colonies, historic paths and a lively centre.
Martin Luther attended the Latin school here in 1498. Johann Sebastian Bach was born in Eisenach on March 21, 1685; the Bach House commemorates the composer's life and work.
Goethe also visited Eisenach several times. The promenades up to the Rennsteig and the Dragon Gorge and Landgrave Gorge natural monuments make the surroundings appear almost like a landscape park.
